First AppearanceThe Redemption of Althalus

A professional thief with a gift for storytelling and a reputation for uncanny good luck. Althalus never knew his father, and barely remembered his mother. He was raised by other thieves on the frontier.

Althalus fancies himself as extremely lucky, and takes it as a personal betrayal when his luck begins to fail him (he later learns his steak of ill luck was caused by Dweia).

Ghend hires him to steal the Book of Deiwos, from The House at the End of the World. There Althalus meets the cat Emerald, who is secretly the god Dweia.

Dweia teaches him to use the words of her Book to manifest power in the human world. He stays in the House learning for 2,500 years.

His task, as read on the Knife, is to seek. He seeks out five other characters to be agents of Dweia; Eliar, Bheid, Andine, Gher and Leitha.

At the end of the book, he destroys Ghend, Khnom and the Book of Daeva. Afterwards, he lives with Dweia, and they conceive a child together.

It would be sheer folly to try to conceal the true nature of Althalus, for his flaws are the stuff of legend. He is, as all men know, a thief, a liar, an occasional murderer, an outrageous braggart, and a man devoid of even the slightest hint of honor. -Redemption of Althalus.
